Work undertaken 2011 - 2012

2011

 

Work for a large national firm of London-based solicitors reviewing expert witness statements in connection with a high profile civil case on tree safety management issues.

 

Work for the Visitor Safety in the Countryside Group (VSCG), reviewing and editing a chapter from the booklet "Managing Visitor Safety in the Countryside", and preparing material on case law judgements and health and safety case decisions for their website at www.vscg.co.uk.

 

Work for a large national firm of Manchester-based solicitors reviewing evidence and providing a statement in connection with a civil case following a work-related tree felling accident.

 

Work for a major UK conservation charity - Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) - undertaking a comprehensive audit of their safety management system.

 

Work with the VSCG to prepare and deliver a workshop on visitor safety management for the Office of Public Works (OPW) in Ireland. OPW is an operational arm of government responsible for the management of all state-owned property and buildings in Ireland, including the management of all heritage properties. The workshop was followed by a 2-day programme of visits to sites near Kinsale and on the Aran Isles.

 

Further work for the VSCG proof-reading the final draft of the updated booklet "Managing Visitor Safety in the Countryside", published January 2012.

 

Work for the Rural Industries Group of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, helping to prepare for a technical update event on tree safety management; speaking at the event and leading a group round the property to discuss aspects of tree safety management. The event was held on the 13th October 2011 at Alnwick Castle and Garden.

 

Work for the Forestry Commission, reviewing and editing forthcoming guidance on wild trails.

2012

 

An agreement is in place with the Historic Houses Association (HHA) for the provision of health and safety advice to its members, and to the HHA centrally. Details appeared in the Spring 2012 edition of "Historic House" magazine and in an e-advisory to HHA Members.

 

Work at Doddington Place Gardens, Kent (HHA Member), carrying out an H&S assessment and reviewing H&S Policy.

 

Work at Easton Walled Gardens, Lincolnshire (HHA Member), reviewing the existing safety management system and visitor safety arrangements.

 

Work for the Rural Industries Group of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, helping to prepare for a technical update event on tree safety management; speaking at the event and leading a group round the property to discuss aspects of tree safety management. The event was held on 22nd March at Althorp House and Estate.

 

Submitted comments to the IOSH Rural Industries Group and the VSCG on a draft Industry Code of Practice - "Preventing or controlling ill health from animal contact at visitor safety attractions".

 

Submitted comments to RoSPA on draft industry guidance on "Managing event water safety - principles and practice".

 

Submitted article on visitor safety for inclusion in the Autumn edition of “Historic House”, the magazine of the Historic Houses Association.

 

Formal contingency arrangement established with Peak District National Park to support their contracts to provide health and safety advice to Northumberland National Park and South Downs National Park.

 

Work for Yorkshire Water, reviewing visitor safety management documentation, undertaking site visits, and providing advice on visitor safety management in practice.

 

Consultancy agreement confirmed with the Woodland Trust for the provision of health and safety advice, with effect from 1st September 2012.

 

Submitted comments to the IOSH Rural Industries Group related to the revision of HSE's Sector Information Minute on management of the risk from falling trees.

 

Work at Fonmon Castle, Glamorgan (HHA Member), reviewing existing safety arrangements and documentation.

 

Work for Historic Scotland, helping them to develop their arrangements for visitor safety management, started in December.
