Video of the week

This is a sub-page of "Touch of Grey" and has very little, if anything, to do with visitor safety, but a lot to do with fine music, although that of course is in the ear of the beholder. Playing around with new ideas, I thought I'd provide a link to a Grateful Dead-related video that has appeared on the Internet and caught my eye and ear, and might be of interest to the casual visitor to this page ... except that after the first few videos, I've moved on to other examples of excellent performances in different musical spheres, although frequently returning to Dead-related material.

Year ending 31st December - the master at work - the Jerry Garcia Band and "Tangled Up In Blue" from about 1990. Happy New Year.

Week ending 20th December - a powerful family performance of a wonderful song - Anna McGarrigle, Rufus Wainwright and Martha Wainwright - "Mendocino".  Happy Christmas.

Week ending 13th December - another from a previous year (1996) at the Bridge School - David Bowie assisted by Reeves Gabrels and Gail Ann Dorsey on an extraordinary acoustic version of "Heroes".

Week ending 6th December - Jenny Lewis and "Rise Up With Fists!", recorded at the annual benefit concert for the Bridge School for children with severe physical impairments and communication difficulties in California. The main organisers of the fundraising concert are Neil Young and his wife.

Week ending 30th November - Martyn Simpson joined by Phil Beer and Steve Knightley for "Cardiff Bay".

Week ending 15th November - from the past, and now't wrong with that - Little Feat and the late Lowell George - "Willin'".

Week ending 8th November - superb solo performance by Peter Gabriel of "Here Comes The Flood" from about 3 years ago.

Week ending 1st November - another legendary and influential musician passes, and to recognise this, Cowboy Junkies and a live version of Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane".

Week ending 18th October - interesting sound and light show from Haiku Salut - "Leaf Stricken".

Week ending 11th October - back in the mists of time for historic gems on youtube - Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir and Joan Baez, "Dark Hollow" from the Warfield in San Francisco, December 1987.

Week ending 4th October - missed a week - to compensate, part of a whole concert - Steve Knightley live in Shrewsbury in 2011, including songs such as "Undertow" and "Bristol Slaver".

Week ending 20th September - Ben Howard and "Oats in the Water".

Week ending 13th September - fine recent performance by Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers of the classic "Mandolin Rain".

Week ending 23rd August - Chris Wood, "Hollow Point", from the Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2011.

Week ending 16th August, a very different track - Ross Ainslie and Jarlath Henderson, "The Man Who Planted Trees".

Week ending 9th August, after a short break from the weekly updates, a double offering of one track - "The Other One". 2 fine individual versions here:

Further from 2011 -

and a very eclectic version from Eden Mi Qedem in Jerusalem in 2010 -

Week ending 4th July - soothing and gentle for a hot weekend - Aoife O'Donovan and Childsplay - "Tears of Healing Rain > After the Rain".

Week ending 28th June - Glastonbury weekend. Calexico were there with a cover of the old Love classic "Alone Again Or", but this version with better sound and vision is live from Austin, Texas.

Week ending 21st June - the Terrapin Family Band cover the old country classic "Long Black Veil".

Week ending 7th June - another from Leslie Mendelson, a cover of the old Gibb Brothers song "To Love Somebody".
